Investing in Art: A Unique Opportunity for Diversification

In the world of investment, diversification is key. While stocks and bonds are staple asset classes, alternative investments like art can offer unique benefits. One innovative company, Masterworks, has democratized the process, allowing everyday investors to own shares in collectible artworks by renowned artists.

Masterworks: Making Art Investment Accessible

Typically, high-value art pieces are the domain of multimillionaires or billionaires. However, Masterworks changes the narrative by allowing smaller investors to buy shares in artworks, starting at as little as $15,000. This approach not only broadens the accessibility of art investment but also provides a tangible connection to pieces by coveted artists without the need to invest life savings.

Case Study: Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild (557-3)

For instance, one of the current offerings includes a piece from Gerhard Richter’s esteemed Abstraktes Bild series. Priced initially at $2,553,000, the artwork exemplifies the potential for appreciation in the art market, with similar works showing a significant increase in value over time. As of now, nearly all shares in this piece have been sold, demonstrating the growing popularity and viability of art as an investment.

Benefits of Art Investment

Investing in art with Masterworks allows you to potentially earn a return once the artwork is sold, based on the proportion of shares you own. Importantly, art investments are not correlated with traditional financial markets like the S&P 500 or NASDAQ, providing a hedge against market volatility. In 2023 alone, Masterworks sold 57 artworks, generating over $200 million in proceeds for investors.

Increasing Popularity of Art Investment

The traction in the art investment space is evident. Masterworks has successfully offered and sold numerous pieces, including works by Banksy, highlighting the robustness and potential of this investment strategy.

Beyond investment, it’s crucial to discuss practical financial planning. A common issue that arises, especially when traveling, is accessing important documents like power of attorneys and living wills in emergencies. To avoid being unprepared, I recommend scanning and emailing these documents to yourself and your spouse. Save these emails in a secure online database such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. Recipe of the Month

Easy Refrigerator Pickles

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 small Persian or 1-2 large English cucumbers (depends on size), sliced into coins or spears
  • 5 to 6 large sprigs fresh dill, roughly chopped 4 small cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 2/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fine sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons whole black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Steps:

  1. Add the cucumbers, dill, garlic and bay leaf to a large jar (about 1 qt) layering the dill and garlic between the cucumbers if possible.
  2. In a measuring jar, briefly whisk together the water, vinegar, salt, peppercorns and crushed red pepper flakes until combined.
  3. Pour the brine over the cucumber mixture. Cover the jar securely with a lid and give it a good shake to combine. If needed, press the cucumbers down so that they are more or less fully submerged.
  4. Refrigerate for ideally at least 1 day before eating, although the pickles will be lightly brined and ready to enjoy after just a few hours. Pickles can be stored in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for about a week.
